Overview

Robben Island was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1999. It was used as a prison where people were isolated, banished, and exiled for nearly 400 years. It was also used as a post office, a grazing ground, and a mental hospital. Most notably, Robben Island is known as the place where former South African president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in jail.
